History
PoonTangle is a loose and fun gathering of saltwater fly-fishers and their families co-hosted by Jim "JJ_BPK" Johnson and "Buttonwood Bob" Brown. It is announced only on the Fly Fisherman, Florida & Caribbean Board for the benefit of those contributors and their friends.Check out these photos from PTI, PTII, PTIII, PTIV, PTV, (more PTV), and PTVI (and more PTVI). Last year's are here.
It’s been said that time flies when you are having fun. Some might argue that it flies whether you are having fun or not. It seems like just the other day the charter poontanglers were dishing out advice, opinions, and information on the old Fly Fishing Bulletin Board. We became known to each other by our monikers, and the implied personalities from our posts…Brock, Lagooner, Sparse Gray, Bad Snook, Dusty, Capt. Chip, Jesse, Bill Blanton, GK, Rick, Tim, and more. We became impassioned to meet face-to-face…and places for this historic event were discussed…briefly. When Buttonwood Bob mentioned he owned a place in the Keys, nominations were closed and plans ensued.Eight years ago this June, we held our first Poontagle. Folks arrived, never having seen any of the group previously, and were as comfortable together as long-time friends within minutes. The original group numbered about twelve. That group has grown in the last four years to nearly fifty. We welcome new folks, and we are pleased with the increase in the number of wives. and significant others.
We are not a tournament, though we fish with enthusiasm on Poontangle Saturday. Our emphasis has always been camaraderie, meeting new fly fishing enthusiasts, and sharing the responsibilities implicit in putting these events together each year. We're looking forward to seeing you at this year's PoonTangle!
